How to wire a Nano Switch to an outlet with a switch.

A licensed electrician with knowledge and understanding of electricial systems and electrical safety should complete the electrical installation.

Installation steps.
To complete the installation you'll need;
- Aeotec Nano Switch
- 1 x 2" 18AWG copper wire
- 4 x 18AWG copper wires
- Philips Screwdriver
- Voltage Tester
1. Shut off electricity to the switch.
Shut off the main circuit breaker for your home so that no electricity reaches the switch for the following steps. Not doing so poses a risk to both yourself and Nano Switch.
2. Remove your existing outlet from the wall.
Outlets are different globally, but for this step you wish to detach any wall plate and adjust any screws so that the wires attached to the switch can be seen and accessed. Do not touch them at this stage.
3. Determine if the power is off
Confirm that the power is off by using the voltage tester to check the Live wire and terminal. No electricity should be present.
Note: Your home’s main circuit breaker must support the overload protection for safety.
4. Disconnect the wires from the back of the outlet.
Now that it's powered off, it's safe to remove the wires from the wall outlet. Loosen the terminal screws to remove each wire from the outlet.
Put the outlet aside for later use.
5. Make note of the color of the wires and what they represent.
Take note of the wire coloring, in the above image:
- Blue wire is Neutral.
- Red wire is Live.
- Yellow wire is Ground.
The color color code will be different per country:
For example, the US color code within a junction box for wires are:
- White wire is Neutral.
- Black wire is Live.
- Green wire is Ground.
6. Bridge L and IN terminal on Nano Switch.
Bridge the connection between L and IN terminal using the 2" 18AWG copper wire.
Tighten the IN terminal.
Lightly screw the L terminal but not all the way, you will need to place a second extension wire in the next step.
7. Extend a wire from L terminal of Nano Switch
Connect one of the 4 x 18AWG copper wires into the L terminal.
Now tighten the L terminal screw to keep the bridge and extension wire in place.
8. Extend a wire from OUT terminal of Nano Switch
Connect one of the 4 x 18AWG copper wires into the OUT terminal.
Tighten the terminals screw to affix the OUT wire.
9. Extend a wire from S1 terminal of Nano Switch
Connect one of the 4 x 18AWG copper wires into the S1 terminal.
Tighten the terminals screw to affix the S1 wire.
10. Extend a wire from N terminal of Nano Switch
Connect one of the 4 x 18AWG copper wires into the N terminal.
Tighten the terminals screw to affix the N wire.
11. Attach Neutral wires to the Outlet with a switch.
Now bring your wall outlet and begin connecting it.
Attach the neutral wires from Nano Switch and your junction box to the wall outlet into its neutral port, then screw them tight into the outlet.
12. Attach L and Live wire to the switch terminal
Take both live wires from junction box and Nano Switch and wire them directly into one of the switch slots on the outlet.
Tighten the terminal's screw to affix the Live wires.
13. Attach the L slot terminal of the outlet.
Take the OUT terminal wire from Nano Switch and connect it directly to the L labeled terminal on the outlet.
Tighten the terminal's screw to affix the OUT wire.
14. Connect the Nano Switches S1 terminal
Take the S1 wire from Nano Switch and connect it to the other switch slot on the outlet.
Tighten the terminal's screw to affix the S1 wire.
15. Attach the ground terminal back on the Outlet.
Take the ground wire from the junction box and connect it directly to the ground terminal on the outlet.
Tighten the terminal's screw to affix the ground wire.
16. Temporarily turn the power back on.
Return to the main circuit breaker for your home and temporarily turn your lighting circuit back on.
17. Add Nano Switch to a Z-Wave network.
It's now time to add Nano Switch to a Z-Wave network so that it can be controlled and automated. To do this;
- Add your Z-Wave gateway / controller into 'add new product' mode. If you're unsure of how to do this, please refer to the relevant section of the controller's instruction manual. The feature may be called add product, including product or pair product depending on the brand of the gateway.
- Press the Action Button on Nano Switch. The LED on Nano Switch will blink green to indicate that it has entered network pairing mode.
The Action Button is the sole button on the rear side of Nano Switch. It sits to the right of the status LED. - When Nano Switch has successfully joined a Z-Wave network, its RGB LED will emit a solid colour.
If Nano Switch fails to join a network, its LED will emit the colour red for 2 seconds and then will alternate through a rainbow of colours. Should this occur, repeat the steps above ensuring that your gateway / controller is in the correct mode.
With your Nano Switch now working as a part of your smart home, you’ll be able to configure it from within your home control software. Please refer to your software’s user manual for further instructions on configuring Nano Switch to your needs.
18. Turn off the power again.
Return to the main circuit breaker for your home and turn off the power to your lighting circuit back again. This is an important safety step.
19. Insert Nano Switch into your wall.
Push Nano Switch and the wires back into the junction box in your wall.
20. Reattached your wall outlet.
Reattach your wall outlet to your wall and add the screws back into it then tighten them.
21. Reattach the wall plate
Reattach the wall plate back onto your outlet.
22. Turn the power back on.
Return to the main circuit breaker for your home and turn your lighting circuit back on.
23. That's it.
