Smoke detector with controllable siren V 1.2

Popp Smoke Detector with controllable siren is designed to warn you of smoke hazards and trigger actions via Z-Wave. It is powered by Popp Z-Wave technology.

Before purchasing make sure to contact your Z-Wave Gateway/Controller manufacturer to determine if this device is compatible, typically most Z-Wave gateways will be generically compatible to Switch and Sensor type devices. The technical specifications of Smoke detector with controllable siren can be viewed at that link.

Quick start.

Getting your Smoke detector with controllable siren up and running is as simple as installing it and linking it to your Z-Wave network. The following instructions tell you how to add your Smoke detector with controllable siren to your Z-Wave network using an existing gateway.

Installation:
  1. Remove the bracket from the detector main unit by rotating it counter-clockwise.
  2. Place the bracket where you are going to install the detector. In each of keyhole slots, draw a mark to locate plastic anchor and screw. Using a 3/16-inch (5mm) drill bit, drills two holes at the marks and insert plastic anchor, and attached the bracket by using the screws.
  3. Open the battery compartment (1) to activate the battery, and then close the cover.
  4. The optional external power supply will connect to the connector (5). The internal battery must stay inside the detector even when the external power supply is connected.
  5. Mount smoke detector to the mounting ring. Make sure the hooks of the detector are placed between the hook and the twist stopper (2) of the mounting base (arrows in image above). Then turn about 15 % clockwise. (Hint. If the detector hook is not placed right between the two mounting ring structures the detector can‘t be mounted to the ring).

Please follow the recommendations about amount as position of the sensor in your home as given above. Avoid to place the sensor into the angle of walls, prefer positions in the middle of the room.

Using an existing gateway:

1. Place your gateway or controller into Z-Wave pair or inclusion mode. (Please refer to your controller/gateway manual on how to do this)

2. Tap the internal button on Smoke detector with controllable siren once. (Press and hold for 2 seconds, then release to pair with secure).

3. Your gateway should confirm if Smoke detector with controllable siren  is successfully included into your network.

Product Usage.

Smoke detector with controllable siren is a purely automatic device, once installed and paired to your Z-Wave network, all you'll need to do is replace its battery when it is low, and Smoke detector with controllable siren will do the rest.

Smoke Detector.

Smoke detector is automatically used to report to your gateway in the case that smoke is detected. Once smoke is detected, a Z-Wave Alarm Command is sent to your main controller and other associated devices.

Low Battery.

When Smoke detector with controllable siren is low on battery power, Smoke detector with controllable siren will send short siren pulses to alert you that the battery will need to be changed. Smoke detector sends no battery report to Z-Wave Gateway.

External power supply

Smoke Sensor and Siren has a connector (5) for an external power supply POPE004100, which supplies the Z-Wave board and extends the battery life. The internal battery must stay inside the detector even when the external power supply is connected.

Automatic radio meshing of smoke detector

Thanks to Z-Wave smoke detector can communicate fully automatically. In case of an alarm (smoke or battery) the device will send a notification to all other smoke sensors in the network. The receiving smoke sensor transmits the alarm to other smoke sensors until all smoke sensors have received the alarm.

Please note that this meshing is not recommended for networks with more than 3 smoke detectors. In this case please control theme using a central controller and turn off the meshing function by setting configuration parameter 5 and 6.

Advanced functions.

Removing your Smoke detector with controllable siren from a Z-Wave network.

Your Smoke detector with controllable siren can be removed from your Z-Wave network at any time. You’ll need to use a Z-Wave primary controller to do this and the following instructions which will tell you how to do this using your existing Z-Wave network.

This method can be used with any Primary Z-Wave Controller even if it is not directly paired to Smoke detector with controllable siren.

Using an existing gateway:

1. Place your gateway or controller into Z-Wave unpair or exclusion mode. (Please refer to your controller/gateway manual on how to do this)

2. Tap the Action button (3)  on backside of Smoke detector with controllable siren once.

3. Your gateway should confirm if Smoke detector with controllable siren is successfully excluded from your network.

Firmware-Update over the Air.

This device is capable of receiving a new firmware 'over the air'. The update function needs to be supported by the central controller. Once the controller starts the update process, perform the following action to confirm the firmware update:

  • Press the Button 2x short to confirm the update.

Reset to factory default.

This device also allows to be reset without any involvement of a Z-Wave controller. This procedure should only be used when the primary controller is inoperable.

  • Press the button on the bottom of the device for at least 10 seconds

Node Information Frame.

The Node Information Frame (NIF) is the business card of a Z-Wave device. It contains information about the device type and the technical capabilities. The inclusion and exclusion of the device is confirmed by sending out a Node Information Frame. Beside this it may be needed for certain network operations to send out a Node Information Frame. To issue a NIF execute the following action:

  • A simple click on the button (3) sends a NIF.

Association Groups.

Group Association is a specific function in Z-Wave that allows you to tell Smoke detector with controllable siren who it can speak to. Some devices may only have 1 group association meant for the gateway, or multiple group associations that can be used for specific events. This type of function isn't used too often, but when it is available, you may be able to use it to directly communicate to Z-Wave devices instead of controlling a scene within a gateway which can have unforeseen delays.

Some gateways have the ability to set Group Associations to devices that have these special events and functions. Typically this is used to allow your gateway to update the status of Smoke detector with controllable siren instantly.

By default, your primary gateway should have been associated to Smoke detector with controllable siren automatically during the pairing of your Siren. For any case you have a Secondary Z-Wave Controller, you'll need to associate it to your Smoke Sensor and Siren in order for your secondary controller to update its status.
