There are two ways to create virtual edge drivers, (1) SmartThings-based virtual Switches, or (2) Edge-driver-based virtual switches. You only need to use the custom edge driver if you need a different device type other than a general virtual on/off switch.
In either setup, the virtual switches will appear in both Google Home or Alexa depending on if you have either set up in your SmartThings account.
Using the standard virtual switches is far easier than installing and utilizing the custom edge driver.
(1) Standard Virtual Switches (may only be available in certain regions)
- Open SmartThings
- Tap Menu
- Tap Labs (beaker icon)
- Tap "Virtual Switch"
- Tap + at the top right
- Input:
- Name of the virtual switch
- Location
- Room
- Save it
(2) Install Virtual Things Edge Driver
- Open the following link:
- Find your Hub and press Enroll
- Press Available Drivers
- Choose Virtual Things Edge Driver [YG] and press Install
(2.1) Add Virtual Things Driver in SmartThings App
- Open your SmartThings App
- Go to devices
- Tap + in the upper left corner
- Choose Add device
- Tap on Scan nearby
- This will create “vDev Controller - ”virtual devices controller "
- Go back to devices
(2.2) Create Virtual device
- Tap vDev Controller for open details
- Tap the gear next to Virtual Thing Type To Create
- Choose a virtual device type
- SWITCH
- DIMMER
- LOCK
- CONTACT SENSOR
- PRESENCE SENSOR
- CURTAIN SWITCH
- MOTION SENSOR
- Tap the ON button (The virtual module is created and the status changes back to Off)
(2.3) Delete Virtual device
- Tap on your Virtual device
- Tap on 3 points in the upper right corner
- Tap Edit
- Tap Remove device
