Bulb compatibility.
illumino Dimmer Switch isn't compatible with all lighting, Below is a list of all the bulb types that are compatible with Dimmer Switch.
- Incandescent bulbs
- Halogen bulbs
- Dimmable CFL
- Trailing-Edge Dimmable LED Bulb
Some LED Bulbs are Leading Edge instead of Trailing Edge, if a dimmable LED bulb is flickering it is highly likely that the bulb is Leading Edge or not dimmable.
These bulb types are not compatible:
- Leading-Edge Dimmable LED Bulbs
- Low Voltage Lighting
- Smart LED Bulbs (WiFi, Zigbee, or Z-Wave as these devices have their own dimming circuits)
Unfortunately, most bulbs are not explicit about what type of dimming property they use in dimmable LED bulbs, but fortunately, most bulbs are Trailing Edge.
Minimum and maximum load.
illumino Dimmer Switch has a small minimum load and will typically work with most low powered dimmable LED Bulbs:
- Minimum Power from Load required: 5 W
It also has a maximum output depending on the type of bulbs that are used.
- Maximum power using Incandescent/Halogen: 500 W
- Maximum power using Trailing-Edge dimmable LED Bulbs / CFL: 150 W
Button Presses and LED reaction.

Important safety information.
Warning: Risk of electrical shock. The main circuit breaker or fuse must be shut off during installation. Do not operate or install with wet or moist hands. A licensed electrician with knowledge and understanding of electrical systems and electrical safety should complete the electrical installation. A faulty connection or use may result in fire or electrical shock. Observe local, regional, national, and other legal regulations and electrical codes. Note that even when turned off, the voltage may be present in the device's electrical terminals. Any maintenance introducing changes into the configuration of connections or the load must be always performed with a disabled circuit breaker or fuse.
Maximum load: Dimmer Switch current can not exceed 4.16 amps. Its maximum rated power output is 500 watts for 110/120V using incandescent/halogen type bulbs or 150W using LED-type bulbs.
Pre-installation checks.
- illumino Dimmer Switch is designed only for use with permanently installed fixtures
Determine what type of installation you want:
Single pole wiring
3-way wiring
4-way wiring
The colors of your wires may not match those in our diagrams; ensure you've identified all wires correctly based upon their source and not just their color
Dimmer Switch requires a Neutral for installation.
Do not use with fans.
Use 14 AWG solid core wires
Wire illumino Dimmer Switch.
There are 2 methods to wiring illumino Dimmer Switch. You can view their direct instructions and videos at the links below:
Before you wire.
- Life-saving: Shut off electricity at the circuit breaker. If installed in a multi-switch box, turn off all circuits. Confirm power is off using a voltage tester to check the live wires and terminals for power.
- Detach any existing light switch you are replacing.
- Wire your Dimmer Switch using the diagram that follows as it befits your installation.
Note: When wiring, make sure that you pull all wire ends into the holes rather than around the screws.
Note: Ground wire is not used in any of the diagrams below;
Do not use the ground on the external dumb switches, the ground connection should only be connected to the Illumino ground port (located at the top of the Illumino).
If you choose not to use ground, make sure to have it capped off.

Advanced functions.
Virtual 3-way/4-way/etc without wires: Z-Wave Group Association.
There will be times you find wiring 3-way external switches may not be possible. illumino Dimmer Switch provides an option to allow a virtual 3-way/4-way/5-way control through the use of Z-Wave Group Association function as long as your Z-Wave Hub/Controller provides the option to set it. While optional, it is possible to utilize the external switch connected to illumino Dimmer Switch as a separate wireless control through illumino Dimmer Switch if an external switch is connected.
Both gang boxes will require AC Live and AC Neutral since each individual illumino Dimmer Switch will require direct power.
You can learn more about using illumino Dimmer Switch as a wireless 3-way/4-way/5-way switch
Removing your illumino Dimmer Switch.
Your Smart Switch can be removed from your Z-Wave network at any time. You’ll need to use your Z-Wave network’s main controller to do this.
Using your existing Z-Wave Controller:
1. Set your Z-Wave Controller into 'Remove Device' / 'Unpair Device' mode. Refer to the Controller's manual if you are unsure of how to perform this step.
2. Tap top or bottom switch 3x times within 2 seconds on illumino Dimmer Switch. The LED will blink purple to indicate it is attempting to remove itself. (Send NIF)
- If successful, the LED will fade in and out to indicate it is ready to be connected to a new hub.
Reset your illumino Dimmer Switch.
If the primary controller is missing or inoperable, you may need to reset the device to factory settings.
Make sure the product is powered. If not, plug it into a wall socket and power on. To complete the reset process manually:
- Press and hold the Action Button for at least 20 seconds once the LED lights up as a solid blue color.
- Release the button, the LED will remain solid blue for 2 seconds.
- Quickly tap the button once while the LED is blue.
- The LED indicator will fade its LED in and out slowly; this indicates the reset operation is successful.
